What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is a condition caused by a disruption of the lymphatic system. When lymph vessels are damaged or blocked, lymphatic fluid can no longer be transported effectively out of the tissues. This leads to chronic swelling and increased protein deposits in the affected area.
Patients typically notice not only an increase in the size of the affected limb but also a feeling of tightness, heaviness, and discomfort. These symptoms can significantly affect mobility, daily activities, and overall quality of life.
Lymphedema After Breast Cancer
Lymphedema is a common complication following breast cancer treatment. Approximately 20% of patients who undergo lymph node removal—particularly from levels I and II of the axilla—develop impaired lymphatic drainage in the arm.
In addition, radiation therapy can further increase the risk of developing lymphedema.
Treatment of Lymphedema
Traditionally, treatment has focused on conservative measures such as manual lymphatic drainage and compression therapy.
While effective in many cases, these treatments require ongoing commitment and can be time-intensive. In more advanced stages, inflammation and tissue changes may further complicate the condition, making additional therapeutic approaches necessary.
Today, modern supermicrosurgical techniques offer new possibilities. Lymphatic surgery can restore or improve lymphatic drainage and provide long-term relief for selected patients.
Our Approach
We focus on early diagnosis and individualized treatment planning. By combining conservative therapy with advanced microsurgical techniques, we aim to achieve the best possible outcome for each patient.
